Early days – The Schuermann Bau

Today probably only very few people remember the former history of this place. The entire site remained abandoned for several years during the 80’s when ill planned building activities lead to the Bundesrepublik’s first massive “Bauskandal”. Then still named the “Schuermann-Bau” it could not be finished due to Rhine water that had destabilized the foundations and corrupted their steel armament. It was said that more than 2 billion Marks had been wasted in the process.

Today

Situated near the river Rhine this masterpiece of post modern architecture is now hosting one of the well known radio stations in Germany – Deutsche Welle.
